  • Depart JFK for Amsterdam.

AN HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION TO AMSTERDAM: BY LAND AND BY WATER

  • Arrive at Amsterdam airport, with assistance upon arrival by Makor representatives.

  • Led by Rabbi Soloveichik, experience an introductory tour of Amsterdam, through a short walk followed by a special Boat Ride Canal Tour of the city.

  • Embrace a true Netherlands experience with a visit to the Bloemenmarkt floating flower market, the largest distribution site of flowers to the city of Amsterdam.

  • Check in to the hotel.

  • Free time for rest and relaxation.

  • Dinner followed by “Rembrandt and the Jews: An Introductory Shiur about the Treasures of the Rijksmuseum,” a lecture by Rabbi Soloveichik. 

  • Free evening in Amsterdam.

                                                MORNING: SEEING REMBRANDT AND VERMEER THROUGH JEWISH EYES

  • Breakfast at the hotel.

  • Guided visit led by Rabbi Soloveichik through the Rijksmuseum.  This national museum of the Netherlands has an unparalleled collection of 15th to 17th century paintings by the Dutch Masters.  We will focus on Rembrandt’s Nightwatch, The Jewish Bride, Jeremiah Lamenting the Destruction of Jerusalem, Portrait of Ephraim Bueno, and several celebrated Vermeers. 

  • Lunch. 

THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH JEWRY AND ITS DESTRUCTION

  • Tour, led by Rabbi Soloveichik, of the Amsterdam Jewish Historical Museum, built around a complex of four synagogues of the community which lost much of its glory during the Holocaust; followed by a guided visit through Jewish Amsterdam in which Rabbi Soloveichik will discuss the glory of Amsterdam Jewry during its heyday and the subsequent devastation of the Nazi occupation on Dutch Jewry. . 

  • Visit the Anne Frank House.   

  • Free afternoon to explore Amsterdam and prepare for Shabbat.

  • Kabbalat Shabbat at the Portuguese Synagogue, followed by Shabbat Dinner, with a shiur by Rabbi Soloveichik on the history and traditions of the Portuguese Jewish community.

  PORTUGUESE PRAYERS AND PRIVATE ART COLLECTIONS:

SHABBAT IN AMSTERDAM WITH REMBRANDT AND THE JEWS

  • Breakfast at the hotel.

  • Shabbat Tfilot at the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue.

  • Shabbat lunch with members of the Amsterdam Jewish community. 

  • Rabbi Soloveichik-led tour of the exquisite Jan Six Collection, one of the few private  collections of Rembrandt paintings.   

  • Return to the hotel for Shabbat rest and relaxation.

  • Visit the Rembrandt House and Museum, where Rembrandt once lived. Rabbi Soloveichik here will deliver a shiur on some of the exquisite etchings crated by Rembrandt of biblical scenes, especially his exquisite Akeidah. 

  • Return to the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue for Mincha and Seudah Shlishit (dinner), followed by Maariv and Havdallah.

  • Free evening with an optional Cultural Event.

RUBENS AND THE JEWS: A VISIT TO ANTWERP

  • Breakfast at the hotel.

  • Depart Amsterdam for Antwerp.

  • Visit the 16th Century residence of burgomaster and patron Nicolaas Rockox, site of one of the temporary collections of the Museum of Fine Arts which is under renovation, followed by a short walk through the Old Town.  Rabbi Soloveichik’s talk will focus on the difference between Rubens’ biblical paintings and those of Rembrandt. 

  • Visit to the Kleinblatt Kosher Bakery, one of the most acclaimed kosher bakeries in Europe, enjoy a “heimishe” meal at Hoffy’s restaurant. 

  • Rabbi Soloveichik-led visit to visit to the Rubens House, home of Pieter Paul Rubens. 

  • Visit the private art collection at the home of some of leaders of Antwerp’s Jewish community.

  • Dinner at Isaac’s Restaurant,

  • Return drive to Amsterdam.

THE SPANISH PORTUGUESE COMMUNITY

  • Breakfast at the hotel.

  • Begin the day with a visit with Rabbi Soloveichik to the Beth Haim Cemetery, the oldest Jewish cemetery in Amsterdam, located in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, a short drive from the city.  The cemetery is the inspiration for a fascinating painting by the Dutch landscape artist Jakob von Ruisdael, whose mysteries Rabbi Soloveichik will elucidate during the visit. 

  • Return to Amsterdam for a visit the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, co-hosted by Rabbi Soloveichik and leaders of the Dutch Sephardic community, with an opportunity to photograph and visit parts of the building closed on Shabbat.

  • Lunch, followed by a taste of Herring at one of Amsterdam’s famous canal-side “Haring” eateries.  

  • A visit with an art historian to the Van Gogh Muesum, which contains the largest collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the world. 

    Free afternoon, with various options including:

    • bike riding through the streets of Amsterdam; gallery hopping with a local art curator; free afternoon for personal exploration.

    Dinner followed by a free evening in Amsterdam.

THE TREASURES OF THE HAGUE AND VERMEER’S DELFT

  • Breakfast at the hotel.

  • Depart for The Hague.

  • Rabbi Soloveichik will lead a tour of the Mauritshuis Museum, which houses the Royal Cabinet of Paintings.  He will deliver a shiur there on the mysterious painting Saul and David, which after enormous controversy has just been scientifically established as a late work by Rembrandt.  We will also see other extraordinary Dutch paintings, including Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp, and Vermeer’s Girl with the Pearl Earing. 

  • Lunch at the Israeli Embassy with the Ambassador. 

  • Stop by Spinoza’s home, where Rabbi Soloveichik will discuss the story of his life, the impact of his thought, and the many requests of Dutch Rabbis to lift his excommunication.

  • Meet distinguished Dutch diplomats at the Binnenhof, one of the beautiful buildings of Europe and the oldest parliament in the world.

  • Depart The Hague; time allowing, we will stop in beautiful Delft, one of the most exquisite small cities in Europe, and home of Vermeer; having visited The Hague, we will have just seen Vermeer’s incredible View of Delft, and then we will experience the view in person.

  • Return to Amsterdam followed by free time for rest and relaxation.

  • Festive farewell dinner.
